A Message from Marilyn Gentry,
Chief Executive of the WCRF global network

We believe the end of cancer begins with research and education. Science shows that about a third of the most common cancers can be prevented through healthy diet and lifestyle choices and, as President of the World Cancer Research Fund global network, I believe this lifesaving message is worth sharing.

The World Health Organization believes that it is possible to reduce premature deaths from cancer and other non-communicable diseases by 25% by 2025, which makes it more important than ever that everyone in society – governments as well as people like you and me – takes action now to reduce their cancer risk.

One of the benefits of being part of a global network is that we can join forces around the world to have the greatest impact.

Our network has become world-renowned for its work in funding cutting-edge scientific research, spreading the cancer prevention message to millions of people and interpreting the available research data relating to diet, nutrition and cancer. We have published three global expert reports:

  • “Food, Nutrition and the Prevention of Cancer: a global perspective” published in 1997
  • “Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity, and the Prevention of Cancer: a Global Perspective” published in 2007; and
  • “Policy and Action for Cancer Prevention”, published in 2009.

Our Continuous Update Project is our ongoing commitment to keeping the science from our landmark reports current.

The range and scope of the WCRF global network’s activities and the variety of people we help is amazing and would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of our staff, volunteers, supporters and researchers.

But there is still much more to do. This is why we are committed to continuing to fund scientific research into the links between lifestyle and cancer and giving people the information they need to make informed choices as we strive towards a future free from cancer.
