WCRF HK’s Summer Academy for Future Scientists
WCRF HK’s first Summer Academy for Future Scientists took place in 2010 which attracted hundreds of participants. Building on the success of the first Summer Academy, WCRF HK organised the 2nd Summer Academy with sponsorship of ZESPRI Kiwifruit again this year. The Academy was successfully conducted in mid-August. This programme aimed to educate children and their parents the importance of a healthy diet, in particular, to encourage the consumption of fresh fruits, which in turn, help lower chances of developing cancer and other chronic diseases.
About the Summer Academy
Close to 600 children and their parents took part in the 2011 Summer Academy for Future Scientists between July and August 2011. Made possible by the exclusive sponsorship from ZESPRI Kiwifruit, the Academy enabled children aged 6 to 9 and their parents to learn interesting facts behind our daily food and lifestyle choices in a fun and innovative way, and strengthen family relationships through the 2-hour classroom session featuring interactive health talks, inspirational experimental sessions and cooking demonstrations. The contents of the Academy:
- Interactive talk on healthy diet
- Cooking demonstration of healthy recipes
- Food Laboratory
Objectives of the Academy include:
- Strengthen children and parents’ nutritional knowledge of the fruits and vegetables we eat every day so as to help them make healthier food choices for the prevention of cancer and other diseases
- Provide practical tips on diet and nutrition for children and their parents to incorporate a healthy lifestyle into daily life
- Promote family relationships through interactive science experiments and games while making good use of the summer holiday
All students who completed the sessions were awarded certificates and goodies from ZESPRI. For answers to the Summer Academy for Future Scientists workbook, please download the Answers to the Experiments (available in Chinese only) now!
Thank you to all who have participated in WCRF HK’s 2nd Summer Academy for Future Scientists. Share some of the happy moments with us now. More photos are also available on our Facebook.
WCRF HK would like to thank ZESPRI Kiwifruit for its generous sponsorship that made this summer children’s programme of WCRF HK possible.
